A STATCOM Based on the MMCC-SDBC

Fuji Electric plans to develop a 6.6-kV transformerless STATCOM (Static synchronous compensator) based on MMCC-SDBC (Modular multilevel cascade converter – single-delta bridge cells). Although there are a number of MMCC topologies, the MMCC-SDBC is chosen due to (a) its capability to control not only the positive-sequence reactive power, but also the negative-sequence reactive power, and (b) its lower cost as compared to the MMCC-DSCC (Double-star chopper-cells) of the same voltage and power ratings. This paper discusses a 200-V 6-kVA down-scaled model and presents some simulation results.
