A Study on Communication of Yielding Intention through Automated Vehicle Deceleration Behavior at Unsignalized Crosswalks

This study investigates how pedestrians recognize a vehicle’s yielding intention from its deceleration behavior at unsignalized crosswalks. Focusing on behavioral conditions such as the vehicle’s initial speed and deceleration start position, the effects of these differences on pedestrian perception are analyzed through real-vehicle experiments. The objective of this study is to clarify the characteristics of deceleration behavior that make a vehicle’s yielding intention difficult for pedestrians to recognize.

Effects of Dark Conditions on Pedestrian Crossing Decisions

This study analyzed the effects of dark conditions on pedestrian crossing decisions under a scenario in which an automated vehicle yields to a pedestrian at an unsignalized crosswalk. Based on real-world vehicle experiments, whether participants recognized that the vehicle yielded was recorded as a binary outcome, and statistical analyses including interaction effects were conducted using vehicle behavior as explanatory variables.

Emotional Evaluation of a Cross-Modally Aware Forward-View Video Driving Support System

This study investigated cross-modal effects produced by a combination of auditory and vibrotactile cues to achieve intuitive and comfortable left-turn guidance. An SD (Semantic Differential) method experiment was conducted using left-turn guidance scenarios, and the effects of different stimulus conditions on emotional evaluations were organized to derive design guidelines.

Consideration of an Alert Method Using Positional Correspondence Between Seat Vibration and Attention Targets

We reinvestigated the facilitative effect of seat vibration–induced spatial attentional orienting, previously examined using simple visual stimuli, on target detection in a dynamic visual environment with real-world driving footage. Consistent with previous findings, presenting seat vibrations congruent with the appearing location of the attention target significantly reduced reaction times for both younger and older groups. Furthermore, subgroup analyses of younger-old and older-old adults suggested that the characteristics of attentional orienting induced by seat vibration may vary across stages of aging.
